What makes Special Teams special?

Simple question... or is it?

http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/dod/socom ... EF_Ch1.htm

I would suggest reading the entire thing but whats relevant to the particular question is this:
Characteristics of Special Operations Forces (SOF)

SOF are unique because they provide the National Command Authority (NCA) a broad range of capabilities. The demands of SO require forces with attributes that distinguish them from conventional forces:

SOF personnel undergo careful selection processes or mission-specific training beyond basic military skills. These programs make unlikely any rapid replacement or generation of personnel or capabilities.

SOF personnel maintain a high level of competency in more than one military specialty. Selected SOF are regionally oriented for employment; cross cultural communications skills are a routine part of training. (Under most circumstances, SOF are not a substitute for conventional forces, but a necessary adjunct to existing conventional capabilities.)

SOF operations are frequently clandestine in nature to ensure mission success. Much of the equipment used by SOF has been designed or modified to meet specific operational requirements. As such, SOF equipment is often delivered in small quantities and is difficult and costly to repair and replace.

SOF maintain a very high level of pre-conflict readiness, and are often in the first echelon of any commitment of US Forces. This emphasized the importance of joint, collective training tailored to achieve and maintain mission capabilities.
Not in the manual is this:
SOF Truths
  • Humans are more important than hardware.
  • Quality is better than quantity.
  • Special-operations forces cannot be mass produced.
  • Competent special-operations forces cannot be created after emergencies occur.
  • Most special operations require non-SOF support

Yeah, nice find. Read that before....

I found something in a military factbook talking about Special Ops...

They like problem-solving games.
Normally have a college degree.

What do you think about the individuals themselves? How do they make the special team?

Well what seperates individuals from the special teams? What makes a special person special?

Kind of, that topic talks about the attributes to GET INTO the Special Team.

Base attributes.

From that baseline they develop or refine them, create new ones.

What I meant was the "Special people" within the "Special teams". The Special person in the Special community.
Every community has its 'role model' members - the best out of the rest. Even selected environments do.

What attributes do you think they hold? What characteristics of their life? Daily routine to that kind of success?

My other question is,
There are lots of 'special' forces out there. Some better than others, for example the UAE Special Forces versus our Australian Special Forces.
What makes them better as a community?

You can even put it into gaming terms of clans. Some are really bad, some are really good but they fall under the 'realism' category.

True competency and desire to do the job and all that it entails.

Team has to have a lot of support financially personally and people on the back end for support for training etc and support and support from your superiors to use you in the correct way.

Lastly tactical proficiency from experienced operators with the ability to flex for the mission

Good summation, sir.
If you have `cleared' all the rooms and met no resistance, you and your entry team have probably kicked in the door of the wrong house.

So we've depicted that attitude and personality relate to the outcome of the operator in battle but what about the ability to take criticism?

An inability to take criticism is a negative trait that is usually associated with arrogance which will probably be grounds for rejection from a "special team".

I just found an old PM from Jason Falla who said, "ADHD" makes Special teams "Special". Haha!
