Instructors/Instructing

Post by Ryan » Sun Jul 22, 2012 3:12 pm

Topic to discuss all to do with instructing and being an instructor: Lesson plans, student feedback, course content, layout and so forth.

Crawl, walk, run.
Theory, demonstration, practice.
If you practice something after 21 days it becomes a habit.

Anyone else do it this way?

Tips on object placement and training such as using tape on the floors:
"Taping the floors really helps in the beginning. Also tape a "V" shape at 45 degrees from inside each side of the doorframe coming together outside the door. I try to keep people outside of that "Vee" until they are making entry. You can see that part on the video. I place another table and showed them the "Vee." from a doorway. Operators tend to expose themselves if they get inside the "Vee." At that point, they are usually, but not always, better off attacking the remaining angle dynamically."

"Unopposed CQB is always a success, if you wanted you could moonwalk into the room holding a Pepsi."

Yup, that's how I teach everything. I do use demonstrations to leaven up the dryness of theory, on occasion. But, theory, demo and practice has always worked well for me. I then add a further layer. "Learn it, do it, teach it." That's how you work as a force multiplier. You create other instructors when you teach.
If you have `cleared' all the rooms and met no resistance, you and your entry team have probably kicked in the door of the wrong house.

Is there a difference when teaching in the order of the 5 Hs and 1 W?

I think the best order to teach something such as a tactic, especially when writing a manual, is:

1. what?
2. why?
3. how?
4. when/where?

An example of this sort of thing here

semper acer , semper velox , semper trux , semper promptus

Quality vs quantity in courses. How do you split it?
And - best ways to teach B/CQB?
