A police offers job is a very complex one, I am not familiar with it myself. There are lots of LE members on this forum, hopefully they can expand this topic with great insight. 
To me the biggest pro for on the ground units fighting in an exterior setting is helicopters. Most pull-overs and runners use back-alleys, skip fences before entering premises and the helicopters are a great tracking tool. Whenever I see and hear the co-ordination between air and ground assets I'm amazed!
