Recording of Events of Pistols Used in Combat

Post by Ryan » Tue Apr 09, 2013 12:43 am

Has anyone found any references for pistols used in combat?

I've found a lack of information on a pistols being used in combat, which is odd since the pistol is considered 'more common', even though still rare, than non-projectile weapons or hand-to-hand - this includes the pistol being used as a melee weapon in terms of pistol-whipping and with a silencer in terms of 'stealth'. What was interesting, and the main factor of putting this thread up, was the amount of times the enemy has used it against our soldiers, where it has been used in a concealed action made for surprise, for example green-on-blue insider attacks. This thread is not meant to offend anyone, but to be an insightful factor; as both life and death gives us an understanding into the dangerous aspects of pistols as weapons in combat. We can only learn off present and previous situations, it's only a fact of war.

Combat/Firefight Use.

- Thomas Baker, WW2.

"Sgt. Baker refused, insisting that he be left alone and be given a soldier's pistol with its remaining 8 rounds of ammunition. When last seen alive, Sgt. Baker was propped against a tree, pistol in hand, calmly facing the foe. Later Sgt. Baker's body was found in the same position, gun empty, with 8 Japanese lying dead before him. His deeds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army."

- Dwight H. Johnson.

"I shit you not, this tank pilot hopped out the hatch of this heavily-armored bulletproof vehicle and charged into battle against camouflaged, experienced, AK-47-toting enemy soldiers armed with nothing more than a handgun, a really bad attitude, and an uncontrollable urge to kill everything in sight. He charged into the middle of the ambush, fighting alongside the men of the trapped platoon, capping dudes with his pistol with incredible proficiency."

- Robert Howard, Vietnam.

- 1st Sgt Kasal, Iraq.

Used M9 pistol during the assault of the "House of Hell" in Fallujah.

Non-Combat/Firefight Use

- Andy Brown, Fairchild AFB.

"June 20, 1994, Dean Mellberg entered the base hospital At Fairchild AFB, and shot and killed five people and wounded many others. Security Policeman, Senior Airman Andy Brown was on bike patrol in the area. Brown rode his bike from over a half mile away and was first on scene. From approximately 70 yards away, Brown ordered Mellberg to drop his weapon. After Mellberg refused, from a kneeling position Brown fired four shots from his 9mm pistol, two rounds hitting the perpetrator in the head and shoulder, killing him."

- War crimes committed by Sgt. Evan Vela, Afghanistan, Iraq.

"Army Ranger Sgt. Evan Vela was sentenced by a U.S. military court to 10 years in prison for executing an unarmed Iraqi detainee who -- along with his son -- had stumbled into a U.S. sniper position last year.

After letting the 17-year-old son go, Vela's squad leader, Staff Sgt. Michael Hensley ordered Vela to use a 9-millimeter pistol to shoot the father, Genei Nesir Khudair al-Janabi, in the head, an order that Vela carried out. "It was murder, plain and simple," military prosecutor, Major Charles Kuhfahl, told the court."

- An American contractor killed by policewoman.

"An American contractor has been killed in Kabul by a policewoman who is said to have mental problems. The woman, identified as Afghan police sergeant Nargas, had entered the strategic compound in the heart of the capital and shot the adviser with a pistol as he came out of a small shop with items he had just bought."

- Lance Corporal Andrew Jones death, Afghanistan.

"Shafied Ullah was with his brother at time Coalition forces approached him. He drew his pistol before being shot and killed..."

- Death Squads and Terrorist Groups, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Noted the use of a pistol in execution videos and murder-reports. Including the use of silenced pistols and disguises (dressed as Iraqi Army in some cases).

Misc

- Lt. Col. Allen West firing a pistol to intimidate a prisoner.

"Lt. Col. Allen West... A battalion commander in Iraq who fired his pistol near the head of an Iraqi detainee after his soldiers had punched the prisoner was fined [and criminally charged]."

- War crimes, Afghanistan. Pistol used as a 'drop weapon'.

"The “kill team” – members of the 5th Stryker Brigade stationed near Kandahar... A pistol found at the scene of the helicopter strike. Gibbs routinely collected such weapons and planted them on the bodies of unarmed civilians they killed, in order to frame their victim as enemy combatants. The presence of a “drop weapon” virtually guaranteed that a shooting would be considered a legitimate kill."

- On Glocks being provided to British forces.

"Faced with the threat of attacks at close quarters – not least from members of the Afghan security forces turned by the Taliban or bearing individual grievances – the new weapons will enable them to shoot faster and more effectively, troops say... The Glock has built-in safety catches, and the pistol can be kept fully loaded with a round in the chamber even when it is in the holster. Its magazine can hold 17 rounds, compared with 13 in the Browning. "Pistols are vital in close combat and are a key part of a soldier's armoury," said Warrant Officer Mark Anderson of the Royal Marines. Personal sidearms were described by soldiers on Wednesday as lifesavers."

- On M9 complaints and a report on alternatives.

"This is all the result of numerous and continuous complaints from troops, who have found that combat in Iraq and Afghanistan provide a lot of situations where the pistol is a crucial weapon... As the U.S. Army Special Forces discovered, if you are well trained and know what you are doing, you should carry a pistol, in addition to your rifle. But not the official issue (since 1985) M9 but something with a bit more stopping power. The Special Forces prefer new model .45 caliber pistols, although 10mm weapons are also popular. The reason for this is that you are most likely to be using the pistol indoors, where your target is going to be really close. You want to knock him down quickly, before he can get at you with a knife or even his hands. Many troops are getting their own pistols and most commanders have been lenient on this issue."

- Law Enforcement.

Noted use of pistol, especially with patrol officers, in almost every firefight. It's common and frequent, even for the opposing shooter to have a pistol themselves. Whether it's pulling it on approach to vehicle, or sneaking it up and shooting through patrol vehicle windows, it's there - used as more of a 'concealed', quick to produce and kill or injure with weapon. If anyone notes the use of one with SWAT or other tactical teams then please note it, as they mainly use long rifles it would be interesting to learn about that aspect.
CQB-TEAM Education and Motivation.

"Pragmatism over theory."
"Anyone with a weapon is just as deadly as the next person."
"Unopposed CQB is always a success, if you wanted you could moonwalk into the room holding a Pepsi."

With a pistol you are more versatile around doorposts etc. In macro tactical sense they are often superior to weapons controlled by two hands. Its point and shoot.

Also they can be combined with a shield, so we always have at least 1 man equipped with a pistol as main weapon. most european collegues we train with also prefer a pistol when rappelling, carrying a shield and various misc roles. Its also the fastest way trough a killing house setup if you magazine allows 3+ rounds per hostile.
