Magasine dump

Post by Admin » Sun Jun 29, 2008 11:51 am

When I was in the service the SOP in a contact situation, was reload and dump your empty magazines. This is of course not a problem in a building but when going on patrol I had about 10 magazines and if we had a contact, and used fire and manuvere to escape .I was quickly down to five magazines to the rest of the mission. I tried some different magazine dumps but it didn’t feel right.

What do you do? And how?

I bought a mag dump pouch from Tactical Tailor. It on a drop-leg rig and it will hold 20 M16/M4 mags. It straps to your belt and the backing of the legrig has antislip material with two QR buckles. Its MOLLE compatable

Of course you could drop the partially used or empty mags down the front of your shirt. I'm sure everyone has heard of that technique though.

Kind of hard to do with our uniform blouses un-tucked and with external body-armor on........

Good basic mag pouch discussion:

Why?

If resupply is possible, and I am in a firefight, I don't want to take the extra 2+ seconds to:
1) locate fresh mag in whatever is my next reload pouch
2) extract mag
3) perform tac reload
4) retain empty mag in hand
5) reach around and locate my moving/swinging dump pouch
6) drop mag in dump pouch

Now!

"For a quick summary, here are the mistakes I made in combat that I believe led to my severe injury and permanent disability:

- Assuming I killed the bad guy with one shot to the torso area
- Performing such a slow reload
- Retaining my empty magazine during the middle of such an intense gunfight
- Stowing an empty magazine in the same location as my fresh magazines
- Looking down at my weapon while reloading instead of downrange in the direction of the threat(s)
- Having my rifle in the Low Ready while reloading
- Standing bladed and not taking advantage of the protection that my ballistic plates offered"
