Interestingly enough, although krav maga and kapap might appear interchangeable to someone unfamiliar with them, they were created independently of each other. It's true that for a time the IDF only taught kapap to certain soldiers that they felt would need more intensive combative training beyond basic krav maga. They are not offshoots of each other, however. I was told this quite sternly when I asked the same thing of a krav maga instructor many years ago.
