US Soldiers will begin training with a new combat simulator next year powered by Crytek's CryEngine 3.
The US army has blown $57 million on a new Dismounted Soldier Training System, or DSTS, from the firm Intelligent Decisions. The simulator is said to contain photorealistic environments, realistic weather conditions and squad interactions all powered by the same tech as Crysis 2.
More impressively, though, instead of just being played on a regular PC, the sim will run on a set of VR goggles worn by the soldier, who controls the action with complete body motion control as they stand on a 10x10 foot pad and look around environments in full 3D - part of a system that's more advanced than anything out today. ""Kinect is not there yet, but it is getting closer," said Floyd West, Director of Strategic Programs, Orlando Division of Intelligent Decisions.
"The sim will recreate infantry missions, and scenarios with vehicles both on land and in the air, and it's playable with multiple people so soldiers can practice in squads. It looks impressive too - check it out in the video below.
There'll be 102 units in service next year, and there's a ton more info in the official press release here. Now, who's a soldier? Can we come and have a go?"

Re: Crytek CryEngine Milsim
It will be years before civvies will be able to get their mitts on this type of tech at home. Oh well, I think I would be satisfied with just ArmA III for now.
