Area Vs Point Targets

What are the differences in tactics and techniques for area vs point targets? I.e. point targets take in all those previously mentioned principles from the CQB shooting part of the forums but may require triangulation of fire, so on. Area targets apply the same principles but at greater range, i.e. an MG plunging fire, that is shooting from distance at an angle where the bullet falls on a target that is behind cover or in a concealed position.

I think the differences are explained very well here
Here is my take on the reasons why and also the intent behind each.
Slow, accurate fire used in a deliberate attempt to kill or incapacitate
Volumous, rapid fire used to prevent (or at least minimise) movement, return fire and/or communication
(but not necessarily kill or incapacitate).
A medium between the accuracy and rate of fire between the previous two used to kill or incapacitate distant, massed and/or obscured targets
