What is the definition firstly if anyone knows???

Street fighting as compared with room clearing, what changes? For example in BHD Delta had an SOP to keep an elbows length off the wall incase of ricochets and spall. When they hugged a wall or corner they'd allow some space to bypass or offset from objects to engage.

Vehicles are heavily used in street fighting, civilians casualties and collateral damage occur frequently. You deal with all kinds of issues on the ground; from linear kill zones of actual streets to fighting in built market places and car parks.

MCWL Urban Attacks has a few good references for street fighting: http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?Lo ... =ADA401372 ...

I've never seen any official usage of the term street fighting let alone a definition of it. It sounds like a sub topic of urban combat/MOUT and if you think about it they really are just giant hallways in a CQB situation...except there are more threat areas etc.

Street Fighting is unofficial; FIBUA, MOUT official. Fighting around buildings in an urban area. Urban areas may have common traits depending on the size and population: A marketplace, local shopping area, residential area (built-up - class changes throughout each suburb) and on forth.

You have a number of features: alleyways, cul de sacs, streets, roads, different types and heights of buildings.

There's modified ways of fighting and moving there. Break contact drills start using street cover, infact any drill starts using the surroundings and can change the way the drill is conducted in terms of movement, sectors of fire and bypassing. Scanning the area you have to sectionalize more terrain and look for more combat indicators; muzzles sticking out of openings, military aged men on rooftops, so on. MG's holding key areas such as corners and doorways to shoot into the street. There are multiple patrol movement formations, static formations and offensive actions. Overwatch positions tend to be on high ground like rooftops. Perimeter security and placement needs no mention, tonnes of information. Vehicle formations such as herringbone, column for convoys. Fighting through Urban ambushes and 'push-throughs'. Infantry moving WITH vehicles changes formation, normally having the vehicle middle or front with access to push up front i.e. to secure a corner and allow for a corner crossing.

Sure there are some tactics and principles that are basically the same but not all. And there's quite a lot to learn and expand on.

On top of that there's a lot of ways of how NOT to fight, to interact with the local populace, to win hearts and minds. Presence patrols, some units wore light caps and no combat helmets to simulate some kind of "you can talk to us" move.
