The "Link Man"!?

Post by Dramaticus » Sat Jan 26, 2013 11:43 am

What is a so-called "link man", and what are his responsibilities? Just wondering after reading the book "Contact!", by Max Velocity.

Usually with multiple small teams aiming around the fireteam or section level, the rear man is employed as the "link man" whose duty is to keep both teams linked and within mutual support of each other. That would mean his or her responsibility is to do a rear check usually every 10-15 seconds depending on terrain in order to maintain the adequate communication link and spacing. Without a link man it has been noted that some teams have broken contact with each other, the rear teams scout or pointman can sometimes get lazy or even lost due to difficult terrain and vegetation.
