Not really. Some go into the ROTC while in college, some go to OCS while enlisted(this gives them a head start by having experiance of how the military works) I know a CSM with a double Doctorats degree in Engineering and he could apply for a direct commision, but he wont. He enjoys his lofty NCO rank and he dont have to deal with the more competitiveness of OFFICER promotion boards.
Like I said...its a calling to be an officer. And remember....an OFFICER can lead, but an NCO is a LEADER

birddog do you get command over some men as a specialist? And if so do you get more command as you go up the specialist grades? And do you go up a specialist grade like a normal promotion?

You know when I was younger I used to think that in the military all officers had to rise from the NCO ranks....my how I was wrong. :lol:

I believe it's police that does that, where you have to rise from the NCO ranks to reach the officer ranks. As in you have to get through the Sgt ranks before becoming an Lt., though I'm not quite sure. :?

Really depends on you. I have lead men as a specialist and I was lead by corporals as well. I just have the ability to think fast and OUTSIDE OF THE BOX in a hostile situation and I have only went to PLDC. But being a SERE graduate, Having a Masters In Sociology and being a parent has givin me the proper skills to do my job right.
And a specialist has to go before the Promotion Board to get his/her E5.

birddog I just read your profile which has OPFOR Team Commander in occupation. Does that mean your the leader of the OPFOR in war games and exercises?

Affermitive, I am an OPFOR team commander for the US Army. I also command a Russian MilSim Airsoft team.

yes they do if you do not have a vision you do not have a path then you are lost in what you want to do or accomplish

Does it matter what kind of a leader that person is? I mean whether it be the main leader of a large organisation or a leader of a small unit within that organisation, do all these kinds of leaders need to have a vision?

A little History about KJ.
I came to Spokane with a task to create an OPFOR airsoft team. I was introduced to some player who were for a better term "BACKYARD" shooters. I enlisted then into my team and got the ball rolling.
KJ was one of them. As we all went to practices and ops, I was looking at each member to see who would make a good XO and who had leadership qualities. It didnt take me long to see that KJ was that person.
He may not have any formal training, but he has the base leadership skills that are needed. He listens, he has a way of talking to his troops and getting them motivated, he trains WITH the troops, and he knows how to be the go-between-man. I got very luck to get KJ on my team AN very, very lucky to have someone of his caliber to be my XO.

A good leader needs a lot of unique skills and training. Don't expect it come straight away - it isn't made for everybody.
