Team Value

"Aim to be a zero. In his book, “An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth”, Chris Hadfield describes how to join a new team at the International Space Station. He describes every team member being either a minus 1, a zero or a plus one. A minus one is someone who takes from the team’s overall effectiveness for whatever reason. It usually comes down to attitude and competence. A zero is someone that doesn’t get in the way but tries to add value where they can but predominantly tries to stay out of the way and not take from the overall effectiveness of the team. A plus one is someone who adds value to the team. Their attitude and competence is such that their presence and contributions are valued. So remember, you can’t be all things in your team. Don’t stress about being the best at everything, you can’t. Just aim to be a zero and in doing so you will find yourself being a plus one over time."

That was a pretty good analysis. I've known a few -1s in my time. They're on every team until, the leader weeds them out.
